  • CaRaVaN at Your Home (IG Live)

    Starts: 7:00 PM
    Ends: 9:30 PM
    Location: Instagram Live
    Description:

CaRaVaN is a weekly "Anything Goes" open mic that began in late 2011. Music of all genres, spoken word, comedy, magic, dance, storytelling, or any other number of other unique performances could hit the stage on any given Monday. CaRaVaN regularly features artists with a wide range of skill levels -- from experienced performers trying out new things to folks taking the stage for the first time -- and we welcome them all!

Since mid-March, public events have been rightfully cancelled in Winnipeg and beyond. This meant we couldn't keep putting on our weekly open mics at X-Cues -- and eventually our summer home at the Cube. But not wanting to give up this meeting of our unique community of performing artists, and looking at many options, we settled on using the Instagram Live platform to meet, perform, watch, chat, and congregate with our community virtually.

Every Monday night at 7 PM CDT, we begin our first hour-long livestream at https://www.instagram.com/purpleroom_wpg (the platform limits us to 1 hour at a time, so after each hour we start another stream). Interested performers can use the "Request to Join" button, or mention in the chat when they're ready to go, and then our host will add them in split-screen to the feed for their performance. Musicians can perform 2 songs, while poets, comedians, improvisers, dancers, and others will get ~5 minutes.

We may switch to a more pre-organized sign-up schedule in the future to avoid "down time" between performers during certain stretches, but each week thus far we've been having a consistent number of performers join in to take us past 9 PM.

Hosting duties are still rotating between Paul Little, Tannis Kelm, Ronel Amata (Squigs), and Mason Kanne -- all under the Purple Room IG account -- with other guest hosts planned for the near future.

CaRaVaN is entirely volunteer-run, and is completely funded by donations, sponsorships, grants, and the organizers' own funds if needed. However, since we don't currently have any costs associated with our online open mics, we instead ask (if you are able) to support one of the many businesses and organizations who have supported us (and in turn, the Winnipeg arts community as a whole) over the years.

    - Our home base for 8 months, X-Cues Café & Lounge, who are basically family to us
    - Longtime sponsor of all our Purple Room Cube events, Smoke's Poutinerie on Albert
    - Supporter of CaRaVaN at the Cube, King + Bannatyne
    - Supporter of CaRaVaN at the Cube and longtime Purple Room pals, Dr. Roof
    - The Exchange District BIZ, who is so great to work with in putting on everything at the Cube (and also had us as part of their Canada Day events)
    - Assiniboia Downs and the whole team behind the Manitoba Night Market & Festival
    - Forth Café, which housed CaRaVaN off-and-on for over 2 years

Now, more than ever, our longtime mantra started by the Winnipeg Frets rings true: ARTISTS CAN!
